A darkly enigmatic and gripping contemporary romance…

Ok, so I’d never come across Nikki Groom – it’s thanks to Claire and Wendy over at Bare Naked Words that I now have another brilliant writer to stalk. I mean follow. But essentially it’s the same thing! Anyhow, I’m really taken aback by Spark in the Ashes, everyone knows I have a penchant for dark DARK romance and well, Nikki Groom has given me a hit of a very addictive and gripping duo here. I loved Sadie, and Ramsey… weeeeeeeell… I loved him too. A lot. Very. Very. Much. Yup. He just has it all; attitude – check, heart – check, sex appeal – CHECK. Totally book boyfriend material, and just like that I’m in love. So Sadie, I know I just skipped over her back there – BUT, it’s actually because although I love Ramsey, it’s Sadie that made this book for me. She’s got so many layers that are slowly pealed away throughout the book that you are constantly double guessing where her character is headed – which isn’t helped by the ginormous cliffhanger that has to be the plot equivalent to a serious case of stinking blue balls.

This book had me all over my seat, mostly on the edge admittedly, but I just couldn’t sit still… it was like all the nervous energy within the plot was coursing through every single limb of mine, non-stop and it just had me gripped to the point that I couldn’t even take a toilet break without major withdrawal symptoms kicking in. A lot of this was down to how relatable and empathise-able Sadie and Ramsey are as characters. They are truly what keeps you anchored to the story. Plot wise, this isn’t your average MC novel with a dash of angst and sprinkling of punches thrown in. In all honesty it’s very much an emotional journey. The plot has some elements that are predictable, however there are also enough twists that you need that familiarity/ predictability to stop the story from going overboard. Groom’s plot development is spot on and interwoven with the character development – which I love because it grounds the story. I especially loved that Sadie’s character traits reflected what her past had endured. I find that many authors create an ideal character whose traits don’t correlate with the scars from their past. Nikki Groom has excelled at creating a window into Sadie’s troubled past through her actions and reactions in the present story. Not to mention the chemistry and intensity between the her and Ramsey… yeeba… it’s scorching.

I have to admit that I was sold on Spark in the Ashes the moment I saw the cover and read the blurb, however the moment I started reading I was completely hooked and way in over my head. I’m still reeling from the cliffhanger and my mind is just firing in all these different direction trying to find my next fix. I just hope that Nikki Groom doesn’t take too long to bring out the book #2 in the Steel Souls series.

Spark in the Ashes is now available.

Excerpt

“Do you have any idea what you got involved in tonight, little girl?” His voice is low, dangerous, and for the first time since I woke, fear taps at each bone as it trickles down my spine and he moves closer. “I might not know your name, but I do know what you’ve done. What are you, some kind of femme fatale? You on a mission to rid the world of all the bad guys?” He chuckles to himself then stops with his body flush to mine. I hold his gaze, refusing to back off, feeling the fire in his eyes burning through mine. He strokes a finger lightly along my temple and down my cheek. “You got daddy issues?” he whispers.

“Fuck. You.” I shove at his chest, but he doesn’t budge an inch which only increases my frustration.

“Oh, sweetheart, usually I would take a girl up on such an offer, but—”

I bring my hand up to slap him, but he catches my wrist and grabs the other one in a flash, roughly pinning them to my side. “Oh no, you don’t.” He laughs under his breath, but his gaze is anything but humorous. “You got a lucky shot in last time. That kinda luck doesn’t happen twice.” He leans in close, pushing my hair from my face gently with his cheekbone and settling his hot breath over my ear. “Now, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. I’m not above binding you again—” He pauses, letting a few heated breaths brush across my skin. “So tell me, are you going to bend and comply? Which will make it so much easier for you, or am I going to have to wrangle your twisted little soul into submission?”
