A sexy and swoony standalone contemporary adult romance with a twist…

I’m going to embarrass myself right now by admitting that I haven’t actually read any of Carly Phillips’ books prior to Going Down Hard. Where have I been? What is wrong with me? Why have I been depriving myself? To make matters worse I had heard really good things of her books, and I’m pretty sure that I put her on my TBR list… even though for some reason when I went through it last night she wasn’t on there. Hmmmm… I’m pretty sure some pixie is tampering with my list – arsehole. Anyway, I got really excited when I was sent this to review – because I’m 99.9999% sure that Carly Phillips was on my list and if you haven’t clocked on she is on there underlined and in bold!

‘I think it’s the way you decided to live … I’m not judging you, but people were hurt. Very badly hurt … I don’t know that I can forgive that.’

I ADORED this book. So here’s the thing – Going Down Hard is angsty. Normally, I don’t do angsty in the woe is me sense – I love myself a little dark, emo angst. BUT, Carly Phillips used the whole chip on the shoulder thing in quite an ingenious way. Don’t get me wrong, at first Derek really gets on my tits. He’s so whiny and belligerent about Cassie and his past. You kind of just want to slap him with a massive wet fish so he snaps out of it. However, this is where the genius comes in on Phillips’ part, Cassie kind of is that wet fish. No pun intended. Get your mind out of the gutter! Look, the guy is SEXY. However, the more that he and Cassie interact the better you get know him and the more you know about him the more attractive his traits become. Make sense? In theory it’s like when you’re getting to know someone, the better you know them the more you like them… or not… you get the drift.

‘Fucking dog cock-blocked me’

So, Derek West, personally I found him hot and captivating… at times I found him charming. His character is the centre of the book and it works really well because to me he is the one that has the biggest change of heart and in reality the background story is really about him. I wouldn’t say that he and Cassie are polar opposites, because I don’t believe they need balancing out. They are well rounded characters on their own, even if Cassie makes him see things differently. But to me that’s just Phillips’ clever character development interweaving with the story. It adds to the ebb and flow of the entire book. Even though Cassie Storms doesn’t go on an epic self-discovery journey throughout the story, you cannot take your mind off her. She’s mellow and feisty at the same time – vulnerable but strong – dainty but sexy. She’s like a walking talking oxymoron. AND IT WORKS!

‘I’m spilling my guts because, as you said, you don’t believe you should have to overlook a lot in a relationship. I don’t want to give you any reason to walk away…’

One thing that I wasn’t a massive fan of the style the book was written in – third person from their perspective POV. It took away from the intimacy of the hanky panky. Not that it wasn’t hot, it just was a little harder to get lost in it. In all honesty the sex was sex… wholesome yet steamy. It wasn’t blush and giggle sex, but it was a part of the story. It developed and expanded both the story and the characters.

‘… we aren’t responsible for the sins of others…’

All in all. I adored the story and the characters. I will be reading the previous books in the series AND all of Carly Phillips’ other series. Her writing isn’t flawless, but it offers a rawness to the book that makes it easy to read and enjoy. I will be starting Billionaire Bad Boys series from the beginning and I will be re-reading Going Down Hard.

‘Derek knew one thing for sure. He wasn’t falling in love with her … He was there already.’

About the Book

Billionaire Bad Boys: Rich, Powerful and sexy as hell.

Derek West rose from poverty to take the tech world by storm. He’s sexy, confident and gets any woman he wants. And who he wants is Cassie Storm, the rich girl he’s never been good enough for.

She’s desperate to save her family’s company and there’s only one man who can help. But Derek isn’t interested in helping. He wants to possess both the company and the woman he’s never been able to forget.

His plan? To seduce her out of his head. Except once he’s had a taste of Cassie, he doesn’t want to let her go. Her family remembers where he came from, and they won’t allow it. When the truth about their pasts comes to light, though, it may be Cassie who’s going down hard.
